7 Animals That Can Kill A Lion…

Just like other animals in wild life, Lions are subjected to been killed or even preyed on by other dangerous animal but in a very rare occasion. We’ve come up with a list of those animals that poses a threat to the life of a lion in the wild.

Major reason why this animals could kill a lion ranges from capitalizing on weakness (Lion cubs/injured lion), fight to death, inexperience, etc…

1. Hyenas

Hyenas are scavengers, but they will also attack and kill lions, especially if they are young or old. Hyenas are pack animals, and they can easily overwhelm a lion.


2. Crocodiles

Crocodiles are ambush predators that live in rivers and lakes. They are one of the only animals that lions will actively avoid. A crocodile can easily kill a lion with its powerful jaws and sharp teeth.

3. Elephants

Elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth. They are not typically aggressive towards lions, but they will defend themselves if they feel threatened. An elephant can easily trample or gore a lion to death.

4. Rhinoceros

An adult rhinoceros is extremely uncommon to be hunted by a lion or even their pride. The rhino weighs heavier than a lion and has a tusk that could cause a fatal wound to a lion.

5. Cape Buffalo

Cape buffalo are known for their aggressive nature, and they will charge at anything that they perceive as a threat. Lions often avoid cape buffalo, but if a lion is cornered, a cape buffalo can be a dangerous opponent. The lions attack cape buffaloes from behind because they are difficult to handle and because of their sharp horns. The odds also change sometimes when the buffalo attacks the lion in greater numbers forming a defense line by the much stronger adult male. This two animals are long time enemies.

6. Hippopotamus

Hippos have all the strength necessary to easily slay a lion. Because of this, the king of the jungle respects his limitations when it comes to hippos.

7. Porcupines

Porcupines are not typically thought of as predators, but their sharp quills can be deadly to lions. If a lion tries to attack a porcupine, it is likely to be injured by the quills. The quills can even penetrate a lion’s skull and kill it. Young male lions often fail in hunting porcupines for their juicy meat.



It is important to note that lions are apex predators and they are not often preyed upon by other animals. However, the animals listed above pose a serious threat to lions, especially if they are young, old, or injured.

In addition to these animals, lions can also be threatened by humans. Poaching is a major problem for lions, and it is estimated that thousands of lions are killed each year for their fur and bones. Lions are also threatened by habitat loss, as their natural prey becomes scarce.
